Development Manager
  GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY
The Development Manager will provide the leadership, strategic direction, management and coordination for expanding the Agency’s fundraising efforts. While reporting to the CEO, the Development Manager will create and implement fundraising strategies that increase agency support from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other sources, with a special emphasis on developing individual donors. The Development Manager will be expected to play a key role in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major donors for annual and planned events and will work in close collaboration with other senior managers, Board of Directors and key volunteer leadership.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Learn the Agency’s, mission, culture, programs, operations, base of financial support and its potential.
  • Create a development plan with the Board of Directors and senior management so that, in partnership, sound fundraising plans, budgets, activities and strategies are developed and implemented.
  • Work with the staff, the Board of Directors, the Chair of the Development Committee and key volunteers, using their talents, resources and ideas to enhance fundraising activities; understand the Board’s giving patterns; enhance board members’ ability to identify fundraising opportunities and encourage their ongoing participation as donors and solicitors.
  • Responsible for influencing and implementing fundraising goals as written in the Agency’s strategic plans and annual fundraising plans.
  • Maintain a proactive, leadership role in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of individual, foundation and corporate contributions; cultivate and directly solicit key donors, working with the CEO, Board of Directors, staff and key volunteers, as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain a close working relationships with the philanthropic community, individual and corporate donors and sponsors, board members, volunteers committees, and other Agency departments; serve as a spokesperson and advocate for the Agency’s mission and programs in the funding community.
  • Manage the Development Department in a fiscally sound manner; supervise, motivate and train staff ; ensure that appropriate systems and procedures are in place to support the Agency’s future fundraising goals; identify and develop professional growth opportunities for the development staff.
  • Prepare and present an annual fundraising plan for the Development Committee and the Board of Directors once a quarter.
  • Ensure that all donors receive a thank you letter and regular communication materials; make donor stewardship a priority throughout the organization.
  • Serve as a member of the Agency’s senior management team; Serve as a member of the Nominating Committee, assisting with the consideration and evaluation of prospective board members.
  • Maintain and update the agency Donor data base.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
  • At least five years of proven experience managing fundraising program in a sophisticated organization with a reputation for quality and excellence, with major gift expertise.
  • A successful track record of personally identifying, cultivating and soliciting 50 individual donors, corporations and foundations for support within 6 months of employment.
  • Experience in managing people and budgets; ability to work in a hands-on environment with limited resources; computer literacy, i.e. Microsoft Office computer programs; knowledge of Gift Maker Pro or comparable donor software, is highly desirable.
  • A record of organizing and implementing such activities as; major monetary gifts, i.e. $10,000 or more, donations, annual funds, corporate and foundation giving, direct mail, planned giving and special events.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in support of various constituencies, including board and staff members, donors, foundation and civic leaders; experience recruiting and organizing volunteers.
  • A track record as an effective communicator; excellent writing and speaking; proficient at writing proposals, donor correspondence and other kinds of materials; the ability to communicate the Agency’s mission, vision and interests to a broad audience.
  • Committed to and enthusiastic about the Agency’s mission and programs with knowledge of African American MSM population, community and issues.
  • Highly entrepreneurial; resourceful and flexible, with the ability to anticipate and act on events and opportunities that may advance the Agency locally, regionally, and nationally.
  • A strategist who is adept with planning, prioritizing, organizing and following through.
  • Highly energetic and able to balance multiple competing priorities.
  • A team builder with strong skills in management and leadership; must understand the importance of motivating and directing a diverse group of personalities.
  • A individual with vision who can create excitement and energy around the Agency’s programs and encourage others to support the organization; persuasive, persistent, and determined in the pursuit of his/her organization fundraising goals.
  • Straightforward and self-possessed; one who shares information readily, listens well as gives advice and respect the abilities of others; diplomatic.
