NAESM remembers the life and contributions of one
of its own, Harold Philpot. To NAESM, Harold was breath of fresh
air bringing laughter and joy to what could have been a more stressful
environment. Given the devastating impact that HIV/AIDS has on the
African American community, Harold sense of humor and charismatic
leadership style oftentimes made the work in HIV prevention seem
more meaningful and important.
On Monday, August 22, 2005, Harold’s
life was unexpectedly taken as he headed home from the gym.
To date, there is no information about who was responsible
for his death or why this unforeseen crime occurred.
On Saturday, August 27, 2005, Harold was laid to rest for
a job well done here on Earth. And as NAESM continues its
work in HIV prevention, Harold’s spirit and unprecedented
contributions remain woven throughout the agency. |

As written in his obituary…
Harold Dean Philpot was born in Gastonia, North Carolina on November
8, 1977. On August 22, 2005, his Heavenly Father called him home
to rest.
 |
Harold received his early childhood education
in Atlanta, Georgia and was quickly recognized by his parents
and teachers for his brightness and gifted talents. During his
middle grade years, Harold participated in a program for gifted
students at Long Middle School and was accepted into the International
Baccalaureate Diploma Program at North Atlanta High School.
There, he studied Arabic and completed a study abroad program
in Egypt and Israel. In 1995, Harold graduated from North Atlanta
High with scholastic honors and received the highest honor as
a National Merit Scholar. While attending Howard University,
Harold pursued a degree in Civil Engineering and from Rusk College
in Mississippi, Harold pursued a degree in Computer Science. |
After working at a metro Atlanta YMCA for six years, Harold entered
into a promising leadership role at NAESM on August 20, 2000. During
his five years at NAESM, Harold not only performed his work with
perfection and enthusiasm, but also he developed and implemented
technological advancements to help put NAESM in the forefront of
HIV/AIDS prevention in Atlanta.
 |
Harold was well known for his intelligence, humor, and the
happiness he felt from simple things in life. On many days,
family and friends can recall his jovial smile and dance as
he ate his well-balanced meals, his determination and strength
after a workout or marathon run, and his willingness to help
others (especially by using Google). Although Harold’s
presence will be missed immensely, his charismatic personality
and loving spirit will be remembered by all whose lives he
touched.
|
Harold leaves to cherish his memories his loving
parents Garnett “Ben” and Amy Philpot, his brother and
best friend Eric Philpot, his adoring sister Deborah Jalloh, and
his maternal grandparents Wheeler “Randy” and Joyce
Kellibrew. He also leaves four nephews, eight uncles, three aunts,
cousins, and a host of relatives and friends.

As written by Terrell Whitaker, friend of Harold…
Cloudy Skies
Every now and then, I lose faith in my inner strength,
I lose sight of the sun through cloudy skies,
I second guess my will to go on,
And I want to retreat to my inner child for comfort and security.
I doubt my courage to face life’s challenges,
And just want to give up the fight.
I leave in the dark, the little light I have relied on for so many
hears,
To see me through to tough times,
And just as soon as I get ready to throw in the towel,
Something inside struggles to get out.
A tiny strand of hope fights its way through the darkness,
Through the doubt,
Through the challenges,
And through the cloudy skies.
